Dave Franklin Wins Australia’s Best Pool Designer

Dave Franklin and the Franklin Pools Australia team can call themselves the best in Australia after Dave took out the title for Best Pool Designer and won Gold at the National 2021 SPASA Awards of Excellence.

The national title comes after the team took out two Gold awards and two Highly Commended awards in the Victorian/Tasmania 2021 SPASA Virtual Awards of Excellence on Friday, 27 August 2021.

The award was based on Director and Founder Dave Franklin’s design at TV Presenter and fellow cast member from The Block, Shelley Craft’s Marvel Street home in Byron Bay.

After receiving the news, Dave commented:

“Winning the state award has been a massive boost to everyone at Franklin Pools Australia, but to then also be nationally recognised has taken our whole team to another level. Receiving recognition like this shows the strides we are making in the industry and highlights the hard work and dedication from everyone at Franklin Pools Australia. I’ve been in the industry for 35 years and this is one of the biggest and best awards yet. To go up against the competition that we did, and come out with a result like this is incredibly humbling.”

Calling for a renovation of the pre-existing pool, Dave was approached to design and develop a ‘modern palm springs’ style setting at Craft’s Byron Bay home.

The real x-factor to this pool comes outside of the aquatic element itself, this being the floating daybed inches above the water that looks back towards the house. With a roof fixed to the fence opening up to the rest of the outdoor area, it allows for protection from Byron Bay’s summer sun without being closed out from the tropical climate.

Not only does the class and advanced heating method stand out, but the family-friendly one-step submerged beach feature allows a shallow bathing platform or a small children’s pool. The modern features continue with the white tile to achieve a sleek ‘glacial’ colour of the water while the high tech gas heated spa can be turned on to heat up directly from the convenience of your phone.

There are a few more subtle features that create an atmosphere in the pool area, unlike any design. The stand-alone Frangipani tree that is lit up by a fixed light in the lush green Zoysia grass provides a magical aura, especially in the evening. To add to the greenery around the pool, the fence has cantilever beams installed in which there are wires attached for the jasmine vines to grow up, adding to that mystical vibe. The water feature propped up near this fence line was specifically designed not to draw attention away from the other main features, however, it provides the area with ambience.

The lighting around the pool sets the mood in the evenings and brings out the defined nature of the elevated pool fence lining, along with the stone features being brought to life.

By combining these elements, Dave and the team were able to complete an astonishing project that has seen them win the best pool designer award at Australia’s most prestigious Spa and Pool awards, SPASA Australia Awards of Excellence.
