When Bryon Bay local and The Block legend, Shelley Craft, was looking to renovate her home, Dave Franklin was on the top of her list. Working together over the years on Australian TV series The Block, Dave and Shelley have developed a long-standing friendship and enjoy working together to create amazing results leaving everyone in awe of the dream spaces.
With more than 25 years of experience in designing and constructing beautiful landscapes, multi-award winning landscaper David Franklin is the Director of the award-winning Franklin Group.
Shelley’s brief for Dave, was to create a landscape that utilised the space perfectly for entertaining their friends and family. Her main inspiration for the project was low maintenance, resort style living that celebrated the outdoor lifestyle that Bryon has to offer, while matching the existing mid-century aesthetic of the home. From here, the Palm Springs vision was born.
Check out some of the design features below,
The Outdoor Shower.
The beach shower was one of the few prerequisites Shelley had for the design, this amazing feature has a Unitex render finish tying it in with the polished concrete throughout the rest of the space. They used a variety of local vendors in this project, this included the beautiful copper brass fixtures of the showers head, taps and the unique penguin styled drain as a personal touch and a bit of an inside joke between their family and friends. The rough potter paving used at the base of the shower for functionality to brush sand off their feet before getting in the pool.
Pool & Water Features.
Keeping in line with the Palm Springs vision, white tiles were used in the pool to create an ice blue water look giving it a very lux/glamour aesthetic. Another amazing finish they achieved in this space was the water feature central to the yard. This water feature design was not made lightly and took around 6 months to come to the final decision! After weighing the options up, we decided to keep this feature relatively neutral as it’s central to the whole area and they didn't want to draw any attention away from all the components of the landscape.
Day Bed.
A common theme with Palm Springs is the white concrete, so to soften a hard area we incorporated a cantilever daybed at the end of the pool using custom made cushions from another vendor sourced in Byron Bay.
Concrete, Pavers & Garden.
Canilter edges and layers are used throughout the landscape creating dimensions that are visually appealing. The use of white polished concrete is a very popular trend right now that’s durable and gives a very fresh feeling that brightens the whole landscape. They created a contrast bringing in the potter paver components with the floating platform, shower base and water feature.
Overall Shelley was looking for “understated elegance”, and thinks the space perfectly captures that.
